Mastering the Architectural Language (Symbols)
Most of what you see on a floor plan is a system of simple symbols. Once you recognize a few of them, the page starts to make sense.
Walls: Two parallel lines. Thicker lines usually mean exterior or load-bearing walls; thinner ones are interior.
Doors: A straight line with a curved arc showing which way the door swings—key for furniture placement.
Windows: Breaks in walls with thin, parallel lines to represent glass and frames.

Find the Legend. Every set of plans includes one—it’s your symbol dictionary. Look for abbreviations like WIC (walk-in closet) or REF (refrigerator).
Trace the Door Swings. Will they block a walkway or cabinet? Adjusting this now can make a room far more functional.
Verify Fixtures. Make sure your chosen sink, range, or tub is clearly labeled in the right spot.
The Critical Truth of Dimensions and Scale
A floor plan is a scaled representation of your home; commonly, one-quarter inch equals one foot. But it’s the dimension strings (those lines with numbers) that reveal the real story: the precise measurements between every element.
Dimension Strings
What it is: A close-up of an area (like a vanity wall) showing exact measurements.
Why it matters: It clarifies clearances and product specs—helping us have transparent budget conversations based on real dimensions, not guesses.
Exterior dimensions show the overall footprint and window placements.
Interior dimensions define room sizes and distances between key features like how far your island sits from the wall.
